Police and army bomb squad officers were called to the Drumleck Drive area of the city after the alarm was raised on Saturday morning.
A number of residents were evacuated to Templemore Sports Complex and the area was closed to traffic while the suspect devices were examined.
Both were found to be hoaxes.
A statement from the PSNI said: "The security alert in Drumleck Drive is now over. ATO attended and examined two suspicious objects which have been declared hoaxes.
"Drumleck Drive is now open to traffic and residents are able to return to their homes."
Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney - who described the devices as "pipe bomb style" - condemned those responsible for causing disruption to local people.
He continued: "The area is very close to local shops and a green where children play so if this device had exploded it could have caused severe injury or death to passers by.
"There is no reason whatsoever to target any person or home and those people who carried out this attack need to explain their rationale to the local community who now find themselves removed from their homes on this cold day."
