The man shot dead by the Real IRA on the outskirts of Londonderry was not an informer or a drug dealer, his family said.

Kieran Doherty, 31, who was shot in the head, was left stripped and tied up in a remote laneway close to the border with the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday night.

A family statement released to local journalist Eamon McCann insists that Mr Doherty wasn't a criminal.

"The family strongly reject and resent the suggestion that Kieran was in any way involved in drugs", Mr McCann told UTV.

They also claim that he had been under "continuous harassment" from the secret service MI5 in the months before his death.

The victim, from the Brandywell area of Londonderry, was the father of a two-year-old daughter and was due to marry his partner, Mairead, in three months.

The family admitted he had served time in prison, reportedly for a robbery in Co Donegal, but claimed he had been trying to get on with his life.

"He was neither an informer nor a criminal. He was never in his life associated with drugs", the family statement says.

"Kieran was under continuous harassment by MI5 in the months before his death".

"Repeated attempts were made to recruit him as an informer. He rejected all these attempts," the family also alleged.

They have called for a police inquiry into MI5's involvement with Mr Doherty.

The statement added:

"Kieran was a good and decent man trying to lead a normal life, looking forward to getting married."

They said that in the last months of his life Mr Doherty was stressed and had lost weight.

They said he was treated in hospital for depression and was sometimes almost unable to speak to his partner.

On Friday police confirmed post-mortem reports suggested he died from gunshot wounds.

His body has been returned to his family.

Deaghan. I note you want to attack me for my comment in answer to another stupid comment about the British . I have condemned this terrible murder the cowardly way it was carried out and I remember there is another child growing up not having her dad.but we will never find a way out by bringing back the past history.

Deaglan, you are right, this man was murdered, it was very wrong. However painful as it may be, there is a very strong suggestion that he did not turn his life around as you claim. We have a habit in Ireland of painting the dead whiter than white, which is not always honest. To ignore what he did in life may be ignoring why he was so brutally murdered, which does nothing to serve justice or bring the truth to light. According to RIRA's statement, he was a senior member. Being even a junior member of a terrorist organisation is a pretty evil thing, something wholly incompatible with his family's claim that he was a good man and getting on with his life. There is no excuse for being a member of RIRA or any other dissident wing, however we should be mindful how painful all of this will be for his family. Ultimately, his family are the real victims here, they are the ones left behind with the legacy of all this to live with. Lorna, no matter what your political persuasion, I'm sure we can all spare them a thought for their pain at this time.

Yet again we see the UTV page as a platform for Lorna and her ridiculous and troubled comments. This man was a murder victim, does it matter who he was? He was murdered! If you read the news article you would have read he had turned his life around. Why would you make such a sick and vile comment. UTV needs to remove your sick and vile comments and stop giving you a platform, you are obviously a very unimportant individual and clearly a bigot. If something happens because of renegade loyalists you have nothing to say! Just stop hoping for mass troubles in this country, the majority dont want it - get a life woman!

observer. Why do you blame the British have you not had a recent history lesson.. We have our own elected government here now and the British government is glad to hand the running for this provence to Stormont. It is being run on a power sharing system. get up to date and forget the past. With your dated view we will still be running around with bows and arrows or at the Norman invasion. Are you so sure your ancesters were not part of this British Colonialism? From what I can gather the citizens of the North want to be part of UK. Southern Ireland could not keep us in the style we are accostomed to and MI5 has to be involved until folk like you wise up and stop thinking of the past

Observer you need to realise that the British presence in Northern Ireland does not come in the form of the Army or MI5, the real British presence comes from all the people who are UK citizens. The sooner Republicans understand this the better, they should be reaching out to the people who wish to remain British instead of trying to bomb them into a united Ireland. Ireland will only be united when the people are united, violence is not the answer.
