Christopher Connor was out with friends at Havana nightclub in Portstewart last December when he was asked to leave by staff concerned about how much the 20-year-old had to drink.
An inquest at Coleraine Courthouse on Tuesday heard he went inside the run-down Montague Arms hotel nearby, where he died from a serious head injury, which is believed to have been the result of a fall.
Two days later, Christopher's body was found by his cousin Simon Creighton, slumped at the bottom of a stairwell.
The coroner heard that Christopher would have been unsteady on his feet because his blood alcohol level was more than four times the legal driving limit.
It is believed he may have fallen backwards and hit his head against the wall, but the Connor family heard that his death would not have been immediate.
A detective said the Montague Arms was so unsafe that the Fire Service and Mountain Rescue were both needed to recover Mr Connor's body.
The coroner said he intends to write to the body responsible for the Montague Arms to find out what action has been taken to make the building secure, and said he may refer the issue to a government minister.
