The boy was found with stab wounds in the family home in Banada, near Tubbercurry on Sunday evening.

"He was removed from the scene by Air Ambulance and taken to Sligo Regional Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later," a Garda spokesperson said.

"A 21-year-old man was found deceased in an outside shed at the same location."

Gardaí have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Cathal McMahon, Crime Correspondent with the Irish Daily Mirror, said: "The parents returned home at approximately 8pm and they found the younger boy with stab injuries at the top of the stairs and they found the 21-year-old brother in the shed."

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Jerry Lundy knows the family.

"The family are very well known, the mother and father would be very well known, respectable people," he said.

"They worked hard all their lives, built a lovely home for themselves, and it's so sad that a 21-year-old and a nine-year-old, both brothers, have died in such a tragic way."

The state pathologist's office has been notified.

The scene has been preserved pending a Garda technical examination. Post mortems are due to be carried out.

Terrible! Broken-hearted for the family. This island needs to be alot more open about mental health issues before incidents like this rise in number.
