Dead mice found in city store

Two dead mice and fresh mice droppings have been found at an east Belfast shop by Environmental Health officers.

The owner of the discount shop has been fined a total of £1,800 in relation to three food hygiene offences.Poundstretcher Ltd, which owns the Poundstretcher outlet at Connswater Shopping Centre, was also ordered to pay court costs of £75.The prosecution was brought by Belfast City Council following a routine inspection of the premises on 14 February 2013.Environmental Health staff found hygiene conditions throughout the premises to be unsatisfactory. As well as the dead mice and droppings, they noted a strong smell of urine. The premises was also found to not be pest-proof.Food items were not protected from risk of contamination, and procedures critical to food safety were found to be inadequate. The city court heard that a remedial action notice was served to prohibit the use of storage areas at the shop, and was lifted on the 11 March after three consecutive days of no pest activity and all pest proofing work completed. The hygiene conditions in the premises have subsequently been improved to the council's satisfaction.
