Two men, one carrying the weapon, entered the sub-post office at Tullyhogue shortly after 9.30am on Friday.
However they made off after an alarm was sounded by a member of staff.
Local MLA Ian McCrea said: "I'd like to commend the member of staff who bravely raised the alarm which was enough to make the men scatter.
"This type of attack is unacceptable and my thoughts are with the staff who I am sure were left extremely shaken following this ordeal."
The criminals made off with another accomplice towards Stewartstown or Newmills in a black saloon car.
Police have asked anyone with further information to come forward.
