On Sunday, rubbish was gathered at the door of the property in the Sunderland Road area of Castlereagh and set alight
A man and woman who were in the house at the time were not injured.
A police spokesman said, "This incident is being treated as a hate crime."
The fire was put out quickly and minor damage caused to the door.
Alliance East Belfast MP Naomi Long expressed outrage at the attack.
"There is no place for this type of incident in our society," she said.
"I am just relieved that no one was injured in this attack. I am sure that this was a traumatic experience for this couple, and I hope that will be able to get over such a scary incident.
"I would call on anybody with any information about this attack to contact the police. The people responsible must be brought before the courts to be punished for such a despicable crime."
Anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area has been asked to contact police.
