It followed a break-in at a house in the Camden Street area on Sunday evening.

Police said a "quantity of copper" was stolen from the property at around 5.45pm. A short time later, NI Fire and Rescue crews were called to investigate reports of a gas leak.

Several residents had to be moved out before the area was declared safe.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "At this stage, police believe the gas leak may have occurred as a result of the theft."

Anyone with more information has been asked to contact the police on 0845 600 8000.
