Army bomb experts also examined the suspicious vehicle at the centre of the Wood Road security alert.
Nothing untoward was found and the alert ended on Sunday morning.
Residents who were evacuated from their homes have been allowed to return and all roads have reopened.
SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said: "This must have been an extremely distressing experience for those who were forced to leave their homes.
"Were it not for the strong community spirit which exists in the Clanvaraghan/Aughlisnafin area and the efforts made by local people to facilitate those who had been evacuated, their ordeal could have been much more severe," she added.
