Co Down farmer rescued from slurry tank

A farmer has been taken to hospital after he was rescued from a slurry tank on a Co Down farm.

The man, who is believed to be 54-years-old, was taken from the pit by the Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) in Dundonald at around 4.40pm on Saturday.

It is understood the incident at the Comber Road property also involved a bull.

The victim was taken to the Ulster Hospital for treatment to his injuries, where he is said to be stable.

NIFRS Station Commander Brian Stanfield said two fire engines and 13 firefighters were involved in the rescue operation.

"They knew the risks and a quick risk assessment was carried out," he told UTV.

Two weeks ago Co Down farmer Noel Spence and his two sons, Graeme and Nevin, died in a slurry tank accident at their family farm.

A wire mesh cover should be on slurry tanks. If there is no licence to keep one then they should introduce a licence and proper training to have one installed on a farm. Inspections should be made by the applicable body on a regular basis.

I do agree with the first two comments that safer working practices are required when working with slurry. On this occasion the farmer seemed to be taking avoiding action to prevent an attack from a bull and coming from a farming background his escape route, possibly the only one was via the slurry network on the farm. This farmer had to deal with two very dangerous situations. And am pleased to hear he is going to be OK.

There needs to be a more safe and easier way for farmers when dealing with slurry. Im surprised no one has even thought about this in the past. some new inventions are needed. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope somethings done soon to help all farners.
