Gordon Brown will discuss Afghanistan and the Northern Ireland peace process with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Sunday.

Her visit is part of a five-day tour of Europe.

On Sunday evening she will meet with Taoiseach, Brian Cowen in Dublin and on Monday she will meet the First and deputy First Ministers at Stormont Castle.

There she will address parliament buildings.

Negotiations over devolving policing powers will be high on the agenda.

Mrs Clinton is also expected to convey President Barack Obama's latest views on the military campaign in Afghanistan.

Despite a steady flow of casualties, Mr Brown has signalled he is willing to send around 500 more troops to bolster the UK's force in Helmand province, and attempt to break the Taliban once and for all.

However, the increase is contingent on other Nato allies sharing the burden, and a new Afghan government being in place.

Meanwhile, nuclear weapons are also certain to be on the agenda, amid continuing fears over Iran's ambitions and plans for a new pact to reduce stockpiles held by the US and Russia.
