Several Northern Bank ATMs were fitted with skimming devices, which stop cards from being returned and makes them available for collection by the criminal.

PSNI have warned anyone whose card was swallowed by a machine in the Great Victoria Street, Fountain Street or Calendar Street areas on Friday morning to contact their bank.

They are urging people to be vigilant at cash machines and if they notice anything unusual attached to an ATM to stop their transaction and contact police as well as the bank.

Anyone using an ATM is also advised to be aware of their surroundings and to guard their PIN carefully.

"Be aware that any form of distraction or assistance while they are using an ATM could mean someone is trying to steal their dispensed money or their card," a PSNI spokesperson said.

Would it not be useful for the PSNI to issue photographs of a skimming device fitted to an ATM in order to show what exactly people are looking for? I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to organise.
