A community worker has reacted angrily after a group of children found a stash of drugs while playing in the street in north Belfast.

The children made the discovery in the Oldpark area on Thursday.

It is understood the stash included the horse tranquiliser ketamine, ecstasy, amphetamines and diazepam as well as drug paraphernalia.

A drugs action group passed them to a parish priest for disposal.

Youth worker Fernando Murphy said a child could have died.

'Frightening'

"It's totally frightening that one young person or maybe several of them who found this could be dead, we could be burying them," he told UTV.

"It's totally unacceptable for anybody to leave anything along those lines in or around built up areas like this, especially with the amount of young people that are in Ardoyne.

"There is going to be a death, and we need to take a wake up call now and deal with it or else just let it happen."

Sinn Fein MLA Caral Ní Chuilín said it was a worrying development.

"It's very shocking particularly because of the sinister nature in which the kids came upon the drugs," she said.

"The important thing is that the drugs are off the street now. What I would prefer to see is the drugs handed over to the PSNI and more so the drugs dealers being dealt with by the PSNI and through the courts," she added.

"There has been a lot of work done in the community, there are meetings that happen every fortnight, strategy bodies, community groups, residents all come together and they're all doing their best to make sure the kids are safe. This is a very worrying development for north Belfast in particular."

Police said they were investigating the incident.
