There will also be more frequent screenings for women aged between 25 and 49.

Health officials say the changes will come into effect by January 2011 and follow recommendations made by the Northern Ireland Regional Advisory Group.

A spokesperson said that following the death of reality TV star Jade Goody last year, researchers have concluded that raising the screening age to 25 was the best way forward.

"The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organisation, also recommended that screening should start at 25," the statement added.
