According to the Office of National Statistics, the average house price in April was £129,000 - down 8.1% over the last year.

Tom McClelland, from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, said issues like the eurozone crisis were continuing to have significant bearing on sales patterns.

"This will likely continue to be the case in the months ahead. Price pressure and cautious buyers are the new normal," he added.

The RCIS findings showed that 31% of surveyors expected house prices to keep falling in the next three months, while just 8% thought they would rise.
