The widow of murdered police officer Constable Stephen Carroll has urged politicians to make the Assembly work on the eve of the first anniversary of his murder.
We’re sorry. This video is unavailable from your location.
"They need to make it work. They have to make it work this time because there is no going back", Kate Carroll told UTV.
"There is no need for tit-for-tat".
Pc Carroll was shot by the Continuity IRA as he answered a call for help in Craigavon, Co Armagh, on 9 March 2009.
The police officer was gunned down just 48 hours after two soldiers were shot dead by the Real IRA at an army base in Antrim.
On Sunday the Royal British Legion held a poignant memorial service in memory of Sappers Patrick Azimkar, 21, from London and Mark Quinsey, 23, from Birmingham who were gunned down by the Real IRA outside Massereene Barracks.
One year on, Kate Carroll told UTV she was still in agony over her loss.
"I talk to him every morning and I talk to him every night and I kiss his picture goodnight."
'Horrendous'
Mrs Carroll said she was grief-stricken when she heard about the attempted murder of policeman Peadar Heffron in January.
The catholic police officer who lost a leg in the dissident car bomb attack was moved out of intensive care last month.
"Whenever I heard Peadar was alright that particular night, I just wanted Steve to be here so much," Kate told UTV.
"It's horrendous, but I was in such a mood at 3am and I couldn't sleep and I cried and cried and cried and my eyes... I could hardly see through them".
"It was snowing that weekend and I walked outside into the shed and I got the spade..."
"I wanted to go out and dig Steve up to just get the feeling and touch him again.
"Horrendous... but that's exactly how badly I felt".
On Tuesday, Mrs Carroll will take part in a cross-community service in Lismore Manor in Craigavon, the estate where Pc Carroll was lured to and shot once in the back of the head.
"I'm just hoping that I can keep strong because I know it's going to be a rough day," she said.
In the spirit of peace, reconciliation and forgiveness, Pc Carroll's widow has decided to start up a charity in Stephen's name and try and help the community where his killers came from.
Mrs Carroll said she was neither bitter nor angry at the men who murdered her husband.
"I feel awful about what happened to Steve but I don't feel bitter", she told UTV.
"I don't want to let people destroy Steve's memory and let them destroy what I have in my heart. I've always been a forgiving person."
Mrs Carroll muses on the fact that 2010 was going to be such a special year for the couple.
Pc Carroll was going to turn 50; she 60 and they planned to renew their wedding vows on their 25th wedding anniversary in August.
Kate Carroll received a Woman of the Year award last year in recognition of her inspirational bravery in the face of her husband's murder.
The Senior Investigating Officer hunting Pc Carroll's killers has appealed for information on the murder.
Det Ch Insp Richard Harkness said: "The investigation into the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll continues one year on.
"Three people have been charged in connection with this case, and the investigation team is grateful for the assistance received so far from the public.
"I believe that there are a number of people in the Craigavon area who saw what happened to Stephen, and saw who killed him.
"These people have yet to come forward and talk to police."
Police said anyone who was in the area of Lismore Manor, Craigavon, between 9pm and 10pm on 9 March 2009, or anyone with information on Constable Carroll's murder, is asked to contact detectives on 0845 600 8000.
Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers Charity on 0800 555 111.
