A group of about eight men in dark hoodies attacked a black Peugeot 206 that was parked in the Fountain area of the city on Tuesday at 2.30am.

"When challenged, they shouted sectarian abuse and made off in the direction of Artillery Street," a police statement said.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on the same night, three cars were damaged in Derry city centre.

Windows of a Ford Fusion, Ford B-Max and Volkswagen Polo were broken at Academy Road in the early hours.

It is thought criminals were seeking to gain access to steal any property that might be in the vehicles, police said.

Three males were seen running from the area at about 2am

Police are appealing for anyone with information on either of the incidents to come forward.
