Businessman Seán Lawlor captured on camera a powerful fire which consumed a car on the M1 motorway just outside Belfast.

The off-road vehicle was forced to pull over on to the Belfast-bound section of the M1 at around 6.30pm on Monday.

Mr Lawlor was one of the first on the scene and called the emergency services in to deal with the incident.

He said the driver battled in vain to save the vehicle from the fire.

"The driver attempted to throw water from a few small bottles over the car," he said.

"Then he tried to get his belongings out of the car before running away."

It is not thought anyone was seriously injured in the fire.

Amazing Hazards that go unseen by the public but dealt with by our fire service daily. Must be really scary standing on a motorway and cars and lorries passing at high speeds. Rather them than me.
