The first haul of £200,000 worth of suspected cannabis was recovered on Wednesday following a search of a property in the Garnerville Grove area of the city.

A 47-year-old man was arrested as a result and charged with cultivating cannabis, dishonestly causing electricity to be diverted, possession of Class B drugs with intent to supply, and possession of Class B controlled drugs.

A significant second seizure of around £800,000 was then made on Saturday as the result of a planned search operation at a residential property in the Holywood Road area.

East Belfast Area Commander Chief Inspector Mark McEwan said: "These two seizures are extremely significant, but they would not have taken place without the support of the local community.

"Local people who are opposed to drugs and who recognise the negative impact which drug usage can have on the wider community, provided information which has assisted in these cannabis factories being discovered.

"Police are committed to protecting communities and we will continue to work with local residents, community representatives, businesses and elected representatives to tackle the issue of drug supply."

It seems that more people want cannabis legal than not , where is the harm in decriminalising it, look at holland , switzerlanantrimd , spain , portugal ,a third of the u.s.a , the list goes on and on...plenty of tax to made out of it to.We can make it happen if we try hard enough.I suppose the police are only doing they're job it's the politcians we need to change.

What good did you really do,s you have took a few plants off the street, most likely that is only 2% of the plants within that area. It states the local community helped with this bust because they know the damage drugs does to their area. I think you have this piece of information incorrect as cannabis does not do damage to any area. These growers where not for personal use but taking this cannabis off the street could be someones medicine that they needed. The only way to end all this is to END PROHIBITION, tax and regulate this drug and our goverment can enjoy an extra 6-12 billion a year, save police time, save lives as cannabis can cure cancers this plant has so many uses but the goverment wont listen. END PROHIBITION!!!
