Police used CS gas to detain a man armed with a hurley stick, a can of petrol and a lighter during the incident in the village of Feeny.
Officers were called to a house at Glenshane Road at 5pm following reports of a disturbance and found the armed man in the garden.
Fire damage was caused to two police cars as officers attempted to arrest the man.
He is due to appear at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Monday.
The accused is charged with arson, attempted arson, threats to damage property and four counts of possession of an offensive weapon.
