A UUP representative has called for security cameras to be installed at one of Belfast's main junctions, following a spate of overnight hoax security alerts across the city.
A suspicious device was found by officers at the Broadway roundabout in the early hours of Thursday morning, leading to the closure of the M1 citybound from Stockman's Lane and Westlink countrybound from Divis Street from 1am to 4am.
"Hoax bomb alerts cause a lot of immediate irritation and concern to local communities affected, and of course to the security services who have to deal with them. However, we must not underestimate the long-term damage of such stupidity", Ulster Unionist Urban Regeneration spokesperson Paula Bradshaw said.
"I am therefore calling for the immediate installation of security cameras at the Broadway roundabout, designed to catch those involved in rioting, placing hoax bombs, or other anti-social behaviour", she said.
Another suspicious object was found close to the police station at Tennent Street, just off the Shankill Road.
Other overnight bomb alerts were sparked on the Ballygomartin Road and Ormeau Avenue.
They have all been declared deliberate hoaxes, police said.
South Belfast Alliance MLA Anna Lo branded the incidents "despicable".
"I am disgusted at the deeply irresponsible actions of those who try to cause disruption through hoax alerts", she said.
"Those who set out to create fear cannot be allowed to impact on the progress made in moving Northern Ireland forward to a better future. Anyone who has any information on these hoax alerts should contact police immediately."
