Two Newtonabbey brothers have been jailed for life for their part in the murder of former UDA member Tommy English.

Robert John Stewart, 35, from Carntall Rise in Newtownabbey, and his brother, David Ian, 39, from Ballyearl Rise in Newtownabbey, were given mandatory life sentences at Belfast Crown Court for aiding and abetting in the murder of Mr English.

The 40-year-old was gunned down by the UVF during a loyalist feud in October 2000.

They will be given their life tariff at a hearing in September.

The prosecutions followed a new investigation by the Historical Enquiries Team after the publication of the O'Loan report into the UVF murder of Raymond McCord.

His father, Raymond McCord Senior, who has campaigning against the UVF gang behind the murders, said it was a welcome development.

He praised the work of the Historical Enquiries Team in investigating the activities of the UVF.

Nine other people have been charged in connection with Mr English's murder.
