The two-vehicle collision happened on the N2, the main Dublin to Londonderry road, near Annamarron at about 6.30pm on Monday evening.

Gardai said the driver of the car the child was travelling in, a woman aged 36, was critically injured and had to be taken by air ambulance to Tallaght Hospital.

Two women, the driver and passenger of the second car, were also taken to hospital in Drogheda.

Part of the road has been closed to traffic while a forensic examination takes place, and anyone with witnessed the incident has been asked to contact detectives.

They are particularly keen to speak to a lorry driver who stopped at the scene.

A spokesperson said: "Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Carrickmacross Garda Station on 042-9690190."
