The teen pedestrian was hit by the vehicle near a bus stop on his way to school on Scarva Road on Thursday just before 8am.

He was rushed to Craigavon area Hospital where he died a short time later.

A man, 30, who was the driver of the van, was arrested, but was later released without charge.

The Scarva Road re-opened again to traffic in the afternoon.

SDLP South Down MLA Seán Rogers has expressed his sympathy.

"My heart goes out to the boy's family, to his friends and the school community of St Colman's College, Newry at this tragic time," he said.

"This is absolutely heartbreaking for the boy's family, and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this incredibly sad time."

Police are appealling to anyone who witnessed the crash or anyone who was travelling on the Scarva Road around the time of the collision to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

What a tragedy and of course my sympathy goes to the boy's family and friends. I also feel for the driver of the van involved.
