Boy, 13, charged over Ardoyne riot

A 13-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the serious rioting which erupted in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast over the Twelfth.

Friday, 30 July 2010

The teenager handed himself into police on Friday after the PSNI released pictures of 14 people - including several youths - they wanted to speak to about the disturbances.

The schoolboy has been charged with two counts of riotous assembly and is due before Belfast Youth Court next Wednesday.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Little said 20 officers are involved in the inquiry into the rioting at the Ardoyne shopfronts.

"I am asking the public to help us identify 14 individuals whom we'd like to talk to in connection with our investigation into the disorder that wreaked havoc on the local community in Ardoyne and put both local residents and police officers at risk of serious injury or even worse.

"It is in everybody's interest - as well as in the interest of justice - that those responsible are charged and brought before the courts," he said.

On Thursday, a 34 year-old man was arrested in connection with the Ardoyne rioting but was released unconditionally.

A 37-year-old woman was charged in connection with rioting which broke out in the Ormeau Road area on 12 July.

She is accused of riotous behaviour and is due to appear in court on 26 August.
