Bookmakers robbed in Londonderry

A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with two armed robberies at bookmakers in Londonderry on Wednesday.

Police received report that a man with a suspected firearm escaped with a sum of cash after robbing a premises in the Strand Road area shortly after 6pm.

He is believed to have made off in a black car towards the Bishop Street area, where the vehicle was later recovered by police.

Then, shortly after 6.30pm a man with a gun was reported to have robbed a premises in the Foyle Street area.

A member of staff inside the premises was ordered to hand over a quantity of money. No one was believed to have been injured during the incident.

The man who was detained in connection with both incidents is currently helping police with their enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to come forward to police at Strand Road.

Meanwhile a 37-year-old man is due to appear at the city's Magistrates' Court on Thursday in connection with a separate armed robbery at a bookmakers on Saturday in the Racecourse Road area.

The man was charged with carrying a firearm with intent and robbery.
