An improvised explosive device has been made safe in Co Cork.

It is understood that a suspect object was discovered by children playing on a green in Gurranabraher, north of Cork city on Monday evening.

The Irish Army said that the component parts of the bomb have been handed over to Gardaí for further investigation.

There are no further details.
