Component parts for a bomb have been discovered during a search operation at Maghaberry prison, Co Antrim, prison authorities confirmed.

UTV exclusively revealed on Saturday night that the parts were found inside the perimeter fence at Roe House, a section of the jail which houses dissident republican prisoners.

The components of a crude device - including wires, batteries and lead piping - were buried in a garden used by inmates.

Prison authorities said they have launched an investigation.

'Not viable'

No explosives were discovered during the three day search of the facility and a Prison Service spokesman emphasised that the items recovered on Saturday could not have made a viable bomb.

The find comes less than a month after traces of the explosive Semtex were reportedly identified during another search of cells.

The NI Prison Service spokesman said: "In the course of the extensive searches being carried out in Maghaberry prison we can confirm that some component parts of a small potential device were found in the grounds of the prison yesterday."

A major search operation saw visits from inmate family members and lawyers cancelled from Thursday.

The lockdown was commissioned by prison Governor Steve Rodford, who said it was in line with management practice.

Maghaberry, near Lisburn, holds many of Northern Ireland's most dangerous offenders, including dissident republican terrorists opposed to the peace process.

Visits resumed on Saturday afternoon.
