A teenager who threatened to slit his throat when accused of raping a girl last October went on trial in Belfast on Monday.
Prosecuting QC Jackie Orr told the Crown Court that 18-year-old Sean Hill, said he would kill himself first rather than "going down for rape".
Hill, from Glenbawn Court, Dunmurry denies raping a 20-year-old student and sexually assaulting her in a south Belfast hostel in the early hours of 8 October last year.
Judge Philip Babington and the jury of seven women and five men were told that the student had been visiting a friend who had just moved into the hostel.
She had gone to bed after having some vodka with her friend. They had also played computer games with several others, including Hill.
Ms Orr said when the woman went to her friend's room to go to bed fully clothed, she was followed by Hill sometime later.
Hill, she said, began chatting to the student, but that according to her he "was talking rubbish", and the only thing she wanted to do was to go to sleep.
He then allegedly turned out the light and got into bed beside her.
Ms Orr claimed that during the attack the student made it clear she wanted nothing to do with him, continually telling him, "no", and that she had a boyfriend whom she loved.
Eventually the woman's friend returned to the room and Hill left and a security guard was summoned.
The court heard that Hill appeared agitated and told the security man: "If she says I have raped her I will kill myself. I will get a knife and put it to my throat".
He later added: "I'm not going down for rape, I will kill myself first", and at one stage put a small fruit knife to his neck and while admitting he had sex with the girl, claimed, "she didn't turn me away".
The trial, which continues on Tuesday, is expected to last up to two weeks.
