Belfast-based technology start-up WorldDesk Ltd is to be acquired by a leading provider of desktop software with development centres in the United States and India.

The agreement was announced at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

WorldDesk, which was founded in 2010, was among the exhibitors at the week-long show attended by industry giants.

The company specialises in 'cloud computing', where users can store data in an online network that can be accessed on other computers and devices.

DeskStream Inc., which was founded in California's Silicon Valley, will adopt the WorldDesk name and branding as part of the takeover, with existing staff and operations continuing in Belfast.

"We are already experiencing a sea change in how people view cloud computing and desktop virtualisation. The acquisition of WorldDesk will help us to capitalise on the opportunities that result from this," Rao Cherukuri, CEO of DeskStream Inc., commented.

WorldDesk co-founders Jonathan Chesney and Claire Moore said in a statement the Northern Ireland company was "delighted" with the deal; adding: "We established WorldDesk in an effort to revolutionise how organisations, individuals and, in particular, schools use computers."

"We wanted to fundamentally alter the norm of how people think of, and use, their computer desktop. DeskStream shares this vision and has placed a great deal of confidence in our mission."
