A poll by London Gatwick airport has found travellers favouring Belfast, Edinburgh and Dublin as top places for their romantic breaks.

Venice, Rome and Paris all failed to make it into the top ten list of Valentine's destinations.

Instead, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin all feature in the most popular choices for getaways.

The most popular destination for those flying from Gatwick this week is Geneva followed by Amsterdam, with Edinburgh third, Belfast seventh and Dublin eighth.

Other top destinations include Barcelona, Grenoble and Dubai.

Nearly half a million passengers are expected to pass through the airport during Valentine's week.

Gatwick's terminals operations chief Nick Henderson said: "As usual, European mini break destinations are proving popular but it's interesting to see less traditional cities, like Belfast, hitting the spot for Valentine's breaks this year."

To be brutally honest, We don't have anywhere here that can hold a candle to Edinburgh and the beautiful north of Scotland. We often read about how beautiful Northern Ireland is, I wonder if the authors of these comments have been to Scotland, it totally leaves us in the shade.

Yes, head to belfast for a romantic weekend, theres so much to do: Bring your lover along to a loyalist "fleg" protest, then listen to the infinite wisdom of Willie Frazer, Jamie Bryson and BNP's Jim Dowson doing their speeches. Then have a romantic meal in the city centre while watching a loyalist riotors attacking PSNI officers while waving their Union flags. And to top the special day off, spend a romantic night in one of Belfasts best hotels with the sound of a police helicopter hoovering overhead for the rest of the night. It'll be a weekend you'll cherish for the rest of your life.
