They were 42-year-old Finbar McGrillen and 40-year-old Caron Smyth.

A man has been arrested by police investigating the double murder, following the discovery of the victims' bodies at a house in the Ravenhill Court area shortly before 3pm on Friday.

The 33-year-old remains in custody where he is still being questioned.

Detective Chief Inspector Una Jennings said the deaths are being treated as suspected domestic homicide, adding: "We believe that the perpetrator of this crime may well have been in a relationship with one or other of the victims."

Police added that a special incident room has been established at Musgrave Street PSNI Station and asked anyone with information to get in touch on 0845 600 8000.

Local people living in the area have told UTV they are shocked by what has happened.

One woman said: "It's shocking news. We found out on Friday and it was very scary. I live here with my friend and it's totally unexpected in such a quiet neighbourhood."

A man said: "It's a very sad and shocking situation because it is a very quiet area and you don't expect to be close to any kind of crime, but especially not the area where you live."

Police said it is too early to determine how the man and woman died.

They added the person they are looking for isn't thought to pose a threat to the wider public.

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said: "The woman who was killed has family in Drumaness and I speaking on behalf of the whole community I am sure they will rally around and provide whatever support they can at this terrible time.

"Such a tragic loss is devastating at any time of the year, but it is even sadder so close to Christmas. My thoughts and prayers are with the family."

Local MLA Jimmy Spratt, of the DUP, said: "I welcome the fact that a man has been quickly arrested in relation to the discovery of two bodies in Ravenhill Court on Friday afternoon.

"The local community is in shock and the news of these deaths so close to Christmas is devastating for the victims' families and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this very sad time. If anyone has any information I would urge them to contact the PSNI immediately."

I literally live in the apartments right behind this house and the police were everywhere over the weekend. It's scary to think that things like this happen on your own doorstep

This is south Belfast, not east. Which is why a south Belfast MLA is commenting on the tragedy. I've noticed UTV frequently seems geographically challenged on story after story. Time to buck up your ideas and introduce a bit of quality control.
