Commuters across Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK are clocking up enough miles every year to take them to New York and back again, a survey has found - with Belfast commuters said to be the angriest in the UK.

Only 15% of drivers enjoy their commute, according to the poll by Allianz Your Cover.

But 70% are left downright miserable by the experience and almost a fifth long for better driving from their fellow commuters.

While Belfast commuters may be angry, the city doesn't feature in the top five worst places to travel to and from for work.

Coventry appears at the top of that particular list, followed by Gloucester, Sheffield, Portsmouth and Liverpool - while Northampton is said to be the best area for commuters.

Around 75% of drivers there actually enjoy their daily journey to work.

Also said to be good destinations were Newcastle upon Tyne, Worcester, Norwich and Cardiff.

But, based on the survey, around a third of commuters arrive at work already frazzled.

"People are spending nearly an hour a day commuting and a third are frazzled before even arriving at work - feeling rushed, stressed and anxious from their morning journey - which is isn't a good way to start the working day," Jon Lott, from Allianz Your Cover Insurance, said.

On the list of things that could improve the situation for those surveyed were cheaper fuel (43%), a travelling companion (10%) or even a better job and nicer work colleagues to go to (20%)!

Yes Anne I do drive in both NI and GB. Believe me you know nothing about traffic and bad roads here. Like everything else here it's just small thinking and a belief that the world ends at Belfast lough. It's like toy town in Belfast compared with modern cities in GB!

The bus lanes are totally useless. They are devoid of busses and the result is that queues build up. cyclists use the footpaths and ignore the green Tarmac anyway. A good idea on paper but with no effective by-pass to get through Belfast centre, and a poor public transport system, the situation here will only get worse.

does mike in Belfast drive?? 1.The price of fuel here is the most expensive in the uk, 2. There are pot holes everywhere - unless, maybe, in the city centres. 3. The city traders complain about lack of customers - blame the powers that be, the new bus lanes are a nightmare! and before you get on 'your high horse' we don't all live on a bus route so would have to buy, service, insure and fuel our cars to get to a bus route/park and then take a bus for the last three miles - be realistic!

I'm afraid the people of NI know nothing about real traffic. This is just provincial thinking as they have nothing to comapre against.

I am not surprised Belfast drivers are angry. The roads are in a terrible state with pot holes every where and that new bus lane system is just a bad idea and the price of fuel is just bang out of order.
