Baseball bat robbery at service station

Staff at a Whitehead service station "feared for their lives" after two men armed with baseball bats carried out a smash and grab robbery.

Workers at the business, on the Belfast Road, were threatened during the raid which was over in three minutes and saw the attackers make off with money and cigarettes.No-one was injured and Wednesday night's incident was caught on CCTV camera.Jonathan Finch of Solo Retail said his staff were terrified and has called for more to be done to protect local businesses from robberies in the future."The staff members last night definitely feared for their lives - they thought that they were going to get attacked physically," he told UTV."So much so that one of the staff members didn't look the attacker in the eye because she did not want to try and form any bond or contact with them."We are an easy target and we are going to have to discuss with the police how we try and defend ourselves against this, because this is the tenth time we have been targeted within our industry and so far we have had a very little success rate at capturing the people who have done this to us."One of the thieves was described as being of heavy build and wore dark clothes and a balaclava. The second was said to be of medium build and was wearing a dark top, light coloured track bottoms, black hat and a black scarf covering his face.Anyone with information on the attack, which happened around 10pm, is asked to contact the PSNI.
