Two people have been arrested over rioting in the Shantallow area of Londonderry, during which youths built a barricade in the middle of the road and set it alight.

A large number of youths were reported to have been involved in the disorder at about 10.30pm on Thursday night.

Police attended the scene at Moss Park and came under attack - missiles were thrown, but the officers escaped injury.

Earlier, at about 8.30pm, a car was damaged in the Glengalliagh Road area.

Two men, aged 18 and 43, were arrested for riotous behaviour and assault on police. Both men are currently helping officers with their enquiries.

A PSNI spokesman said that no further disorder was reported after the arrests were made.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and has any information is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I suppose living in Belfast Sarah it's only natural to feel unsafe walking the streets. I walked the streets of Derry on the same night as you and felt totally safe

Was in Londonderry last night (21/7/12) and have never felt so unsafe in my life , the place has a real sinister feel about it , rude people , louts hanging about street corners looking for trouble or an easy target to mug and not a police officer in sight , i thought this place would of had a massive security force presence considering the amount of republican violence that goes on daily ,i feel safer in Belfast , how this place is going to be celebrated as a city of culture defies belief , if me and my friends are planning a night out in a different area i think i would choose Syria over Londonderry.

i live in the area, and witnessed the riot lastnite, it was nomore than a few waines throwing stones and burning a few bins. lets get real, they were shootin in ardoyne lastweek., so anyone that doesnt live in derry should not throw stones in glass houses, NIC. at the end of the day the cops landed with a small army to remove the wood to begin with, then drove up and down the road morealess taunting the youth for hours, before they finally burnt the bins and started the "riot" , and to be fair the cops arrested a 40 year old man whom i saw myself do nothing while passing except stand in the wrong place with a few beer to enjoy the madness that was happening, and as for concerned resident about the bonfire...be careful what you ask for, because instead of a bad night anti-socially on the 15th august, you now have riots happening that could continue to, the 15th of august. maybe, just maybe its time the older generation listen to the youth in derry, and give them something else as an alternative at the very least. its taken a week for a councillor to even make a remark about this ,this was building up in derry for a week before they removed the pile of wood for the bonfire. its a disgrace not one politician even showed their face to consult with the youth their views on the bonfire / alternatives etc.
