Two men and a woman assaulted the pair in the Silverstream Avenue area of the Co Down town shortly after 8.30pm on Friday.

The teenager suffered serious head wounds and was knocked unconscious.

Police say the attackers fled in the direction of the Bangor carriageway.

Local councillor Alex Easton has condemned the attack.

"The whole incident is very serious indeed," the DUP man said.

"Somebody could have been killed. I'm absolutely horrified that a teenager and a young man have been attacked with a hammer and a knife."

Police said none of the injuries are believed to be life threatening.

They have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
