It is believed the victims - aged 28 and 30 - were attacked by a man wielding a hammer in St Kilda East.

The assault happened at the hostel where the backpackers were staying in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"Two of the males are both in a serious condition in Alfred Hospital with life-threatening injuries," explained Glen Jackson from the Victoria Police.

A 31-year-old man, who is thought to be local to the area of the attack, has been arrested and charged.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing support to the families of the two victims.
