A 29-year-old man has appeared at the Magistrate's Court in Derry charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to a father-of-seven, in a single punch attack outside a bar in the city centre on Wednesday night.

The defendant, Teddy Roulston, a father-of-two and a painter from thr Ballycoleman estate in Strabane, was interviewed five times between his arrest on Wednesday night and his court appearance on Friday. His solicitor told District Judge Barney McElholm that the defendant "feels both remorse and guilt for his actions."A police officer told the court that the victim, Peter Morrison, 36 and from the Creggan area of the city, underwent emergency surgery in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital on Thursday and that his condition remained critical. She said CCTV footage showed the defendant punching his victim once with his left fist to the face outside a bar on Waterloo Street.Mr Morrison fell to the ground "and eye witnesses reported hearing a loud crack after he hit his head off the pavement."The officer said that both the defendant and his victim had been drinking heavily together all day. They'd had a disagreement, but then made up by shaking hands and hugging one another before the incident took place. The District Judge said everyone knew of the potentially serious consequences of a single punch attack. He released the defendant on his own bail of £1,000 together with one surety of £500.As part of his bail conditions, the defendant must report daily to the police, abstain from alcohol, observe a 7pm to 7am curfew, and stay out of Derry. He'll also be electronically tagged until his next court appearance on 10 July.
