Belfast City Council said the material was found during repair works.
It was in an area of the pool that is "inaccessible to the public".
That area has now been sealed off to protect staff and for public safety while the asbestos is removed - however facilities other than the pool will remain open.
A council spokesperson said: "Given the nature and location of the material involved the indications are that the risk is minimal.
"However more detailed surveys and air tests are being conducted as a precautionary measure. Air samples taken today show that it is safe to continue to use other parts of the leisure centre. All facilities other than the pool will remain open for business as usual."
Repair works to the pool have been taking place since 20 August due to a leak.
The council said no time limit has been set for the closure until investigations are complete.
