The 58-year-old was arrested on Friday afternoon in connection with the blaze which broke out in the living room of a couple's Sandyknowes Park home at 2am.

They were awake at the time made it out of their home uninjured, but the woman, who is 61, went back in to rescue her dog.

She was overcome by fumes and found unconscious by the fire crew in an upstairs bedroom. They brought her out of the house and gave her oxygen which brought her round.

Shortly afterwards, the man, 58, who had escaped the fire and was standing outside, also collapsed.

Members of the NI Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) gave the man CPR, and both were taken to hospital for treatment.

We would always advocate that you never ever go back into a burning house. Our motto is: get out, stay out, get the Fire Service out.

Mark Beresford, NIFRS

Assistant Group Commander Mark Beresford said: "It was a very big risk to go back into the house because it doesn't take very long, a few seconds breathing the toxic smoke, to be overcome and within minutes you can be dead. Fortunately the crew were there very quickly."

The fire crew found the dog in another upstairs bedroom and took him outside. Mr Beresford said the dog "seemed to be fine".

The couple's injuries are also not thought to be life-threatening, but he said the woman had a lucky escape.

"It was a very rapid and severe fire in one of the rooms in the house and it was very badly damaged. There was severe smoke damage to every other room," said Mr Beresford.

Police and the fire service are investigating the cause of the fire, which is not yet clear.

Sarah, UTV won't publish the term i'd use for an idiot who makes idiotic comments such as yours. You've compared a dog's life with a human life. There is no comparrison regardless of age or dependancy. By going back in for a pet, a person risks their life and the life of others who go in to save them. Are you so thick you don't see the impact such a bloody stupid action has on others?.......Hows this for a scenario....fireman dies after going into a burning house to rescue a person who entered the burning house to save a dog....Lets see...1 dog dies...or 1 dog and 2 people and the impact to both families? Would that make sense and be acceptable on any planet?

I also believe Assistant Group Commander Mark Beresford said "What they should do is to get out and stay out. We will enter the property and hopefully recover the pet. But the pet's life is not worth one human life" Well I'm sorry but if it doesn't take long in HIS own words, seconds to kill someone then I'm not waiting 14mins+ on the response team to save my pet. I'm not that 'hopeful' I think that was a very rude comment to make towards a woman who selflessly risked her life to save her pets, I'd like to think I'd do the same and I wonder would he have made these comments about a child? I'm not saying a child and a pet are on the same level but both are depending on adults to protect them. Perhaps he should praise the woman instead of throwing back-handed comment because had she of died then the fire service would be under attack due to how fast they responded. Simple.

while I should say she is a very foolish woman for going back in to get her dog I cant because i would do the same myself, we recently had a housefire in the neighbourhood and there were 3 dogs involved, the poor girl was distraught at her dogs being in the house, 2 made it but the 3rd they had to let go, very sad, so many people said it was only a dog, but to a dog owner, they are so much more, they are part of the family, i hope the 2 people make a full recovery and hope the dog was ok
