A woman has been arrested by police investigating the theft of Christmas food donations from a church in Hillsborough.

The 45-year-old was detained in Craigavon on Wednesday, after the items were stolen from the front porch of St Malachy's last weekend.

Bags of dried and tinned food had been collected by parishioners to be passed on for distribution amongst local people who are struggling this winter.

They were lifted while the minister preached a sermon about food poverty.

Police said a woman was arrested by officers from the Hillsborough Neighbourhood Policing Team, with help from the Tactical Crime Unit.

She is currently being held in custody and assisting police inquiries.

As a resident of Hillsborough it makes me feel safe to know that this sort of crime will not be tolerated in our village. Well done to the officers.
