The man was detained on Friday in connection with the incident at a house on Moss Road near Lambeg on Saturday 24 August.
A group of people set fire to rubbish in a wheelie bin at the front door and burning litter was also put through the letterbox at approximately 12.40am.
Part of the house caught fire, but the pair in their early 70s were rescued by a passer-by before fire crews arrived.
All three were treated for smoke inhalation and a second neighbour who came to the couple's aid suffered burns.
It is thought that other small fires were also started in the area.
Police have appealed for anyone with information on the attack to contact them.
