The 34-year-old victim was attacked in the early hours of Monday morning.

Four roads were closed for hours as police investigated the incident which happened on Main Street, close to its junction with the Loughill Road and Drumadoon Road.

A 26-year-old man was later arrested in Coleraine and is helping the PSNI with their inquiries.

The roads have now been reopened. According to police, the serious assault was reported shortly before 2.40am - no other details have yet been released.

DUP Mayor of Ballymoney John Finlay, who lives in Cloughmills, told UTV that the assault may have been the result of a "dispute" outside a pub.

"It's a very tragic incident and my thoughts and prayers are with the man and also with the families involved," he said.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information about the incident to contact CID at Coleraine on 0845 600 8000, or to pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers.
