A 59-year-old man has been bailed over a racist slogan painted on a house in Hillsborough, Co Down.

He was detained following a report of criminal damage at the home of a Chinese couple in Dunbeg Park on Thursday at around 10.20pm.

Police are treating the incident as a hate crime.

Lisburn Inspector Paul Wright said: "It is believed that white paint was thrown at the front door of a house in the area, with a racist slogan placed on the door.

"The slogan has been removed and efforts have been made to remove the paint."

The man who was being held on suspicion of criminal damage, vehicle interference and possession of an article with intent to cause criminal damage, has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

DUP MLA Edwin Poots, who visited the scene on Friday, said: "There is a couple who live in this home, they are a local couple who provide a good service to the local community, and my understanding is that they are well thought of in the neighbourhood hood.

"I have been speaking to neighbours who have left letters in to express their sympathy with the couple.

"So that is the sort of community that it is, they are neighbours that get on with people and this would appear to be a one-off incident."
