The 58-year-old man was hit by a car on the Newtown Road, which is between Newtownhamilton and Belleeks, at around 5.30pm on Friday.

Police said a 29-year-old female driver has been arrested. She is being questioned by police on suspicion of a number of road traffic offences.

Dominic Bradley of the SDLP said: "I am saddened to hear news of a fatal accident on the Belleeks to Newtownhamilton Road. My thoughts are with the family of the deceased and I express my sincerest sympathy to them. I know that the community will rally around the family and offer every support and comfort to them at this very difficult time."

Anyone who was in the area at the time or saw the crash has been asked to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple Police Station on 0845 600 8000.

The road, which was closed between the Outlecken Road and Carrickrovaddy Road, has reopened.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a pedestrian was hurt after being hit by a vehicle in Coleraine.

The 70-year-old woman has been taken to hospital after the collision on the Bushmills Road on Friday evening.

"Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this stage," a PSNI spokesman said.

The Bushmills Road has reopened.
