A man has been arrested after a pensioner died as a result of a three vehicle crash near Downpatrick, Co Down on Wednesday afternoon.

A black Seat Ibiza, a blue Vauxhall Corsa and a Landrover were involved in the incident on Killard Road shortly before 4.20pm.

The victim, who was a pedestrian aged in his 70s, died at the scene.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested for a number of offences. He was detained in the Downpatrick area and is currently helping police with their enquiries.

A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital for injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Killard Road remains closed between Ballyhornan village and Kilclief Road.

Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes for their journey.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.
