The burglary took place in the Colinbrook Gardens area, on the outskirts of west Belfast, on Friday at around 9.40pm.

The 23-year-old occupant of the house was attacked after answering a knock at his door.

He was confronted by four men who forced their way into the property.

The victim was made lie on the floor, before being struck on the head with a large wrench. He was later taken to hospital for treatment to his injury.

The men searched through the house, stealing two games consoles, the man's mobile phone and a sum of cash.

It is believed the gang left the area in a vehicle.

SDLP Dunmurry Cross Councillor Brian Heading: "This is an appalling attack on a young man who should be able to feel safe in his own home, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.

"I am concerned that the current economic climate is playing a part in incidents similar to this one, with disaffected and impoverished people, many of them young, turn to crime as a means of funding a better life."

He concluded: "While I cannot rightly say what drove those behind this despicable attack to do what they did, I do think that strategizing for crime prevention should go hand in hand with social change and shoring up the economy, so that, whatever else, deprivation is less of a driver for crime."

Police want anyone with information about the robbery or who noticed unusual activity in the area to come forward.
