    Analysis

Efforts are continuing to ensure the biggest loyal order parade of the year passes off as peacefully as last year's.

The parade, which marks the anniversary of the siege of Derry in 1688/89, involves an estimated 10,000 Apprentice Boys, up to 5,000 supporters and a large number of bands.

A number of hard-line republican groups are also planning to stage protests during the event.

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement, regarded by many as the political wing of the Real IRA, will stage a rally in Shipquay Street about conditions for republican prisoners.

The group have set up camp in the Bogside as part of what they call "a two-day anti-internment camp."

There is an air of tension in the city. Tomorrow the police will be on alert for any potential threat.

32CSM activist, Gary Donnelly, says the planned protest will be peaceful.

"We can guarantee that the protest, that anyone participating in our protest, we would call on them to be entirely peaceful, otherwise the message is lost if they erupt in violence.

"All our protests have been 100% peaceful and not one arrest has been made."

Another protest is being organised by the Republican Network for Unity (RNU) and will be held at Free Derry Corner at 2pm.

Sinn Féin says community workers in the Bogside will be on the ground to divert young people away from any potential trouble.

Local MLA Raymond McCartney said: "Throughout this week, in the Bogside in particular, you have the Feile, and many events attended by every generation and young people in particular.

"On Saturday there will be events for young people to show the positive side of this community, and I welcome and support the efforts that community workers are doing in relation to this."

Last year's parade was the most peaceful in decades.

The Governor of the Apprentice Boys, Jim Brownlee, says that "only a very small minority" comes "with the intention of disrupting" the parade, which marks the culmination of the week-long Maiden City Festival.

"Over a number of years and in particular the last few years we've had peaceful parades", he said.

"We've had a good understanding with the wider community. We've gone into talks with the wider community and we've discussed various issues."

As a potential flashpoint, crowd control barriers will go up in and around the Diamond area and many shops will shut down. The rest of the city will stay open for business.

Garry what has Bloody Sunday got to do with the parade. Peter. reason why the shops would be empty is the threat from the Republicans would keep people away. You say noone in the shops Blame the republicans they throw petrol bombs not drop pennies .The Protestant faith has had tp put up with harrassment before and now only the brave will go to Derry for the 12 th August parade

M B if Catholics hadn't have tried to Starve the Protestant Population of the City to death there would be no ABs. They are an organisation born out off Catholic Oppression of Protestants. I think Catholics don't like being reminded about how their ancestors treated mine. Catholics don't like being reminded they lost the Seige of Derry. They started it and they lost it and if you can't celebrate winning a war you didnt start there is something badly wrong. M B you just don't want a Prod about the place. See ye in December for Lundy day and we have a load of events in pipeline for 2013 when Londonderry will be UK City of Culture. That will really give you something to gurn about. ABOD will be around long after you and me are not. Like it or Lump it!

I have no objections to Unionists/Loyalists parading in their own districts but this is just pure provocative, intimidating triumphalism. Many of the marchers throw pennies down from Derry's Walls and make hateful, bigoted remarks at the Bogside residents as they go by. It's nothing whatsover to do with culture, it's ALL about keeping the boot on the necks of Derry's Catholics and reminding them that Protestant supremacy will ALWAYS hold sway in the Northern state. Derry is shut down for the entire day as Loyalists openly drink, urinate and abuse people everywhere they go. I don't condone violence but there is a lot of anger in Derry when these medieval fundamental marches take place. The business community are largely afraid to open their mouths and tell the truth that this seriously affects their trade and go along with it but let's not hide the truth. This march is a festering sore that wouldn't be tolerated in most other normal European cities.

@wilma, i agree with you. and anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that the 32 csm is linked to the ira. so maybe james should read this article before he runs to his wee solicitor looking for legal aid

Nationalists shall never accept these sectarian marches of hate through our towns. Well done the 32 CSM for Peacefully showing Nationalist objection to this mob of Bigots. Derry is an Irish City and no Brits should be allowed to march here especially after what happened on Bloody Sunday.
