Thieves broke into a garage at the site in the North Road area at the weekend and stole a defibrillator machine and other medical equipment including a response bag from a parked ambulance.

"As a charity SJA NI receives no government funding. It is supported by volunteers who give their time willingly and freely to provide a first aid service to the local community," a statement said.

"In order to continue this service in Newtownards we would appeal to anyone who may have information about the location of the equipment or the identity of those responsible to contact the PSNI."

The break-in happened sometime between 8.30pm on Saturday and 2.30pm on Sunday.

The serial number of the Philips FR2 defibrillator is 052613427.

Police have asked anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.
