Officers were alerted at about 11.10pm on Friday after the attack on the property in Caulside Park.

A shotgun blast shattered an upstairs bedroom window at the back of the house.

A woman in her 50s and her 20-year-old son were inside at the time.

They were not injured, but were left badly shaken by the ordeal.

The woman told UTV her family has lived in the house, in the mixed estate, for more than 20 years.

She said she believes they were targeted because they are Catholic and now wants to move.

A loyalist splinter group calling themselves the Real UFF telephoned the UTV newsroom overnight to admit they were behind the attack.

PUP spokesman for the area, Ken Wilkinson, has condemned the attack..

"I have known this family for over 20 odd years - I've lived beside them in the past," he said.

"This family haven't offended anyone, aren't politically minded in any way and I think they're just a soft target for people who are still living in the dark days and have nothing to offer this community."

Mr Wilkinson added: "If this is what they have to offer the community - God help us."

Investigating detectives have said a motive has yet to be established.

My heart goes out to these victims andthis sordid event only provides proof to the theory that there will never be true peace in N. Ireland. Will N Ireland ever join the rest of the world in the 21st century I doubt it !

It is just getting out of hand. One of the few estates in the town to have had relatively little trouble over the past 20 years and now this sort of thing is happening. Cut it out!
